EG&G stands for Edgerton, Germeshausen and Grier. The company pioneered the photographic strobe light, but gradually ended up in the government services business.
The current state of EG&G is difficult to determine. The company was sold to the Carlyle Group , an investment company that specializes in government services. The Carlyle Group has been the subject of much investigation due to connections with the bin Ladden family, George Hebert Walker Bush, and many former federal insiders. There are a number of websites that follow the Carlyle Group, though the most thorough is http://www.bushnews.com/bushcarlyle.htm . EG&G was split up prior to the Carlyle Group's purchase of the company, with the electronic component portion of the company being bought by Perkin-Elmer on February 7, 2000, while the Carlyle Group purchased the spook portion of EG&G.
As of August 23, 2002, , EG&G is now owned by URS Corporation. Checking the EG&G webpage ( http://www.egginc.com/ ) confirms this, but only for EG&G Technical Services. EG&G is also a part of JT3, a limited liability company that handles range control for the government. The other partner in JT3 is Raytheon.
At one time and still perhaps at the moment, EG&G is/was a government contractor that operates at Area 51, the Nevada Test site, and countless military installations. Recall that one of the G's in EG&G stands for Herbert E.Grier. If you drive near McCarran, you will discover one the roads is called Grier Drive. Coincidence? At one time, a check of the phone book revealed that EG&G Special Projects is/was located at various addresses on Grier Drive.

At the moment, EG&G Special Projects is no longer in the Las Vegas phonebook, and the EG&G website no longer indicates they have any offices in Nevada. The numbers above no longer appear in the reverse phone directory. However, the signs outside the buildings are still there as of September 2002.

You can read the EG&G on line from either EG&Gs website or JT3.. Typically, they will include the phrase: Must be able to obtain and hold a TS/SSBI security clearance." Now TS is obviously Top Secret. I believe Monica Lewinsky (AKA former White House intern) had one of those. SSBI stands for "single-scope background investigation", which is government-speak to me. An explanation of security clearances can be found here, but the following summarizes it pretty well:
- The National Agency Check (NAC) or Entrance National Agency Check (ENTNAC), which involves records checks of national law enforcement and government agencies.
- The National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI), which includes the records checks described above plus written inquiries to local law enforcement agencies, former employers and supervisors, listed references, and schools attended in the previous five years.
- The Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI), which is a full field investigation with a scope of 10 years that includes the checks described above plus credit checks, subject, reference, and neighborhood interviews, as well as verification of birth, citizenship, education and employment.
EG&G at one time and may still provide the guard services at Area 51, AKA the camo dudes. The guard service capabilities of EG&G is no longer found on their website.
