Located
at U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground, West Desert Test Center in the
Great Salt Lake Desert is Michael Army Airfield sporting a new 11000 x
150 feet runway for departures, and 10000 feet for landings (displaced
thresholds 1000 feet from each end), with hangar, ground support
equipment, and three instrumented approaches. Recently, with the help
of the Hill AFB Barrier Maintenance Crews and the Michael Airfield
staff an E-5 Aircraft Arresting Barrier was installed. This will
greatly enhance the emergency recovery of fighter aircraft with
tailhooks. The airfield has been a safe haven for aircraft with
in-flight emergencies for many years. From 1998 through the end of
2004, 89 aircrews with in-flight emergencies have found the airfield a
welcome site.
The airfield is equipped to handle all Army and Air
Force aircraft with some weight and seasonal restrictions. Restricted
airspace up to 58,000 feet makes this remote landing site secure. The
20,000 square-foot hangar has office space for use by the customer.
Operational
uses are tactical air operations, testing chemical and biological
decontamination of aircraft, Drop Zones, air re-supply and logistics,
unit tailored exercises and more. The airfield staff can support 24/7
exercises or contingency operations with little or no augmentation.
