Mount Tamalpias Mid Air Crash

The crash of these two planes is one of two airplane crash sites on Mt. Tamalpias (Marin County, Ca.). The details of this crash can be found at http://www.sonic.net/azfuller/F4UFGtdy.htm . The crash has two main sites about half a mile apart. The starting point for your hike is the parking lot by the  fire road that leads to Laurel Dell, which is reached by taking West Ridgecrest Blvd from the Pan Toll Road.  Hike the Laurel Dell Fire Road down toward the Cataract Trail. You will see a bridge that crosses the creek towards your right. Head toward the bridge but don't cross the creek. Rather stay on the trail and crawl under a downed tree and you will see the engine from one of the planes:

You can spot the engine in the creek, but you have to keep your eyes open. This is the view of the engine if you follow the direction above. If you haven't spotted the engine in the photo above, here is a close-up:

I checked the area around this engine and haven't found any other parts of the plane. Maybe you'll have better luck.

This is the view of the engine from the other side:

The rest of the crash is found near the Mickey O'Brien trail. To get there, head back to the bridge and cross the creek. Turn left onto the Cataract Creek Trail and head towards the Mickey O'Brien Trail. Take the Mickey O'Brien trail until you reach a clearing on your right. Head into the clearing and search for a trail towards the left. It is not marked and hard to find. The goal is to follow the creek nearby. This is what the debris field looks like:

Sorry about the quality of this photo, but there is very little light in the creek bed.

I couldn't find the wing, which may have been stolen as indicated in the other web site. The remaining photos are of the engine and various plane parts. Remember to just take photos and not plane parts so the next person can find something.
